The initial purchase costs of the LED Light Bar are not cheep, but you have to look at the acquisition costs over the lifetime of the product. Most manufactures these days, including ours, are guaranteeing the LED’s in their products for 5 years. They wouldn’t do this if they were not reliable.
Modern technology means that lightbars can be designed as extremely “Low Profile” which means considerably less drag when driving, resulting in increased fuel savings over a period of time, compared to the old halogen rotator lightbar designs. Moreover, as LED’s are not bulbs or lamps, there are no filaments to burn out requiring the bulb to be replaced. In fact, quality designed LED units will run for between 50,000 and 100,000 hours.
Why are LED Lightbars So Expensive? Any new technology when it first comes along will be expensive. It is true to say that LED Technology has been around for a few years now. But, in the field of Emergency Vehicle Lighting, you must have above all, reliability. Using cheap parts is just not an option. You will see on sites such as eBay, lots of cheap and not so cheap imports from mostly China, that are not worth the money you have paid for them. For a start they are, Illegal to fit to your vehicle because they do not carry the required certification.
This means that they have not been tested to the required standard which for the UK and The EU is ECE R10 & ECE R65. These specifications mean that in the case of ECE R10 the equipment has been tested in accordance with the United Nations requirement for electrical interference which may cause loss of control of motor vehicles. And, in the case of ECE R65 that the light output conforms to the regulations in terms of colour, light output visibility and light output brightness.
Each country in the EU has its own mark under this system. In the UK, this is e11, or E11. Equipment certified in one EU country, should be legal to fit in another member state, but this is not always the case.
The above regulations are one of the reasons that approved LED Lightbars are not cheap. This testing can often cost hundreds of thousands of pounds, and has to be conducted for each product model manufactured.
The cost of the LED’s is another factor. Yes you can buy LED’s by the thousands at pretty good prices, but these LED’s are not suitable for Emergency Vehicle Warning Lights. No, the LED’s used need to be of the highest quality, and therefore they cost a lot more. They also need to be very bright. This high intensity requirement causes a significant problem, HEAT.
This heat has to be dispersed otherwise it will destroy the LED. This means adequate heat dissipation systems have to be incorporated into lightbar design.
Couple this to the fact that products manufactured here in the UK cost more to produce, and you can soon see how the prices rise. LED Light Bars represent an amalgamation of Quality Design, Manufacture, and excellent Value for Money.
